Dublin coach Jim Gavin told the Herald at the event of his pride in the panel and spoke highly of the fans.

“Winning the Sam Maguire obviously means a lot for the team. We only ask that they go out and be the best they can be and that’s what they did, so I’m proud, to say the least,” he said.

“The support we had from the stands, even driving to Croke Park through Fairview, there were people lined up along the streets in their Dublin jerseys cheering us on,” he said.

“In the last 15 minutes of the game, when we were being asked questions by Kerry, I think our supporters carried us on and we are eternally grateful for that.

“It’s a great time in the players’ lives and we need to cherish the moment, so it’s going to be a good night.”

Young forward Cormac Costello described how the All-Ireland date was all the squad had been thinking about since last year’s semi-final exit at the hands and feet of  Donegal.

“It’s unbelievable – to win is something special,” he said. “The support also helped us big time. When you need a roar from the crowd they’re there to push you on.

“I’m looking forward to just soaking it all in. I’ll take each moment as it comes and then go back to the clubs and take it from there.”

Proud siblings Ann-Marie and Aoibheann Flynn expressed their joy for their brother Paul as well as another family member who was on the winning Dublin panel.

“We’re unbelievably proud, he’s our baby brother, and we’re over the moon,” said Ann-Marie.

“We’re equally proud because Darren Daly is our brother-in-law – it brings the whole family together and we’re just super-proud,” said Aoibheann.

It emerged last night that Clontarf man Jack McCaffrey nearly didn’t make the team after suffering a gastric bug for three days which left him on a drip for a 24 hours.

The Dublin wing back was inspirational, and former Dublin manager Paul Caffrey said he was amazed he made the starting 15.

The team are expected to pay the traditional visit to Crumlin Children’s Hospital later today.
