Despite an improved second-half from a listless Sligo, GMIT held out for a merited one-point win at Connolly Park, Collooney in this FBD Connacht League second-round game.
Full-forward Andy Glennon's free-taking - he scored five - kept the students ticking over but it was Joseph Donnellan's goal within 11 seconds of the restart, which put GMIT 1-6 to 0-6 up, that proved the turning point.
The visitors were full of purpose throughout and midfielder Damien Brennan's powerful display was another positive factor. Niall Murphy again showcased his talent by scoring six points but the midfielder's zest wasn't replicated by his team-mates, although Sligo fielded a stronger side compared to their first-round loss to Galway, with the likes of David Kelly and Brendan Egan in the starting 15.
The students led 0-2 to 0-0 after 10 minutes and would have led at half-time but for Murphy's stoppage-time equaliser which made it 0-6 each.
GMIT were fortunate, however, that Sligo failed to exploit several gilt-edged goal chances.
Joe Rogers pulled a shot wide after three minutes, Eoin McHugh pinged a goal attempt off the upright in the 38th minute and Kelly lashed a shot over - for Sligo's 11th point - when a three-pointer seemed the likelier outcome with 12 minutes left.
