Doherty goal puts Longford on their way to victory over Carlow
Longford 1-14 Carlow 1-9
Longford made light work of Carlow at Pearse Park to ease into the provincial semi-final.
The hosts stormed into a commanding lead in the opening quarter and never relinquished that advantage over the course of this dull encounter.
Longford inflicted the damage in the early exchanges, thanks to the clinical finishing of Joe Heaney and Daragh Doherty.
Carlow were forced to play catch-up and at no stage did they threaten Longford's grip on the game.
Fifteen minutes into the contest, Longford had firmly stamped their authority after they registered 1-5 without reply.
Full-forward Heaney bagged two points before corner-forward Doherty slotted home a close-range goal beyond the reach of netminder Ciaran Byrne.
Carlow were handed a golden opportunity to reduce the gap when Shane O'Neill stepped up to take a penalty in the 15th minute, but he scuffed his effort.
The visitors broke their duck in the 17th minute when O'Neill pointed a free and by the interval they had managed to cut the gap back to six.
After the break, Carlow endeavoured to find some way back but a lack of firepower up front proved to be their downfall
