ROSCOMMON produced a fine closing quarter to collect their second victory of the campaign at Tullamore yesterday.

The Connacht men found themselves on precarious ground when an expertly converted Anton Sullivan penalty put the home side on level terms, 1-6 to 0-9, with 13 minutes gone in the second half. It was anyone's game at this point but it was Roscommon who showed the greater hunger, composure and fitness to edge across the finish line.

They defended resolutely, holding Offaly scoreless, while points from Ger Heneghan (free), Matt Scally and Brian Murtagh secured the win that leaves them in a healthy position.

The defeat, Offaly's second of the campaign, leaves them immersed in the relegation dogfight, and they will be hoping that Niall McNamee can make a quick return to action.

With McNamee on board, they would more than likely have won here but without him, their attack lacked any real potency -- reflected by the fact that they have only managed seven and eight scores respectively in their opening two games.

The first half was a lively enough affair and Offaly were the better side early on.

With young Bernard Allen doing very well in the corner, they led twice in the opening quarter.

With the wind at their backs, Offaly were left to rue a couple of missed goal chances, while Roscommon were dangerous every time they got the ball into the outstanding Conor Devanney.

Devanney kicked three first-half points as Roscommon led by 0-5 to 0-3 after 22 minutes. Points from Alan Mulhall and Bernard Allen (free) sent Offaly in on level terms (0-5 each) at the break.

Ciaran Cafferkey and Alan Mulhall (free) exchanged early second-half points before the visitors pulled three clear. Sullivan's penalty levelled it, but Roscommon produced the goods when most needed.
