Derrytresk slam 'trial by media'
DISTRAUGHT Derrytresk rounded on the media after a Herculean effort for All-Ireland glory came up short at Croke Park yesterday.
Shorn of seven players suspended from the semi-final row in Portlaoise, defiant Derrytresk were an inspired force for three quarters of the match.
But as the match wore on, tiredness set in and they left gaps for the Galway men to exploit. Afterwards Derrytresk joint-manager Paul Hughes would speak to only local Tyrone journalists, with club officials blaming trial by media for their defeat.
Crucially, a fresher Naomh Padraig outscored them by five points to nil in the last quarter. "It's great for a small club like ourselves in the west of Ireland," smiled manager Stephen Joyce.
Before the match the seven suspended members of the Derrytresk squad went down to the front of the Hogan Stand to link arms with the rest of the squad in a pre-match huddle.
Led by captain Cathal O'Neill, they were the better side early on and after Conor O'Neill and Joe McKee pointed, Niall Gavin scored a goal from the spot when Pat Campbell was fouled.
Seconds later, a poor kickout put Gavin through and he was fouled by 'keeper Paraic Walsh for a second penalty -- but Walsh redeemed himself, diving to his right to tip it away.
At half-time Derrytresk were worth their 1-4 to 0-3 advantage.
A much-improved Clonbur got a dream start to the second half when Alan Kyne raised the green flag.
The Tyrone men fought back, but in the 58th minute Liam Kearney put Clonbur in front and they held on, despite losing Liam Diskin to a red card for a second bookable offence.
