Departing star Mooney steers St Colman's to MacRory glory

St Colman's, Newry 2-9
St Patrick's, Dungannon 2-8
MacRory Cup Final

Caolan Mooney scored two stunning goals to inspire St Colman's to a second successive title in a memorable decider at the Athletic Grounds.

The Rostrevor star showed just how big a loss he will be to Down football when he leaves later this year to pursue an Australian Rules career with Collingwood.

A strike in each half laid the foundations for this slender victory, though Dungannon were able to respond on each occasion with goals from Harry Og Conlan and Aidan McGarrity.

Mooney set the game alight with a wonderful goal in the 15th minute, a fine finish to the roof of the net from Jerome Johnston's pass. The sides went in level at the break on 1-4 each.

In the second half Dungannon eased two clear, but in another flash of Mooney magic he cracked in another goal.

Jack Haughey and Patrick Morgan tagged on points, but once again, the Academy hit back with a goal, finished by McGarrity.

In a rousing finish, Shay McArdle and Ciaran Girvan pointed, but St Colman's held out for an 18th title.
