Three unanswered points in the second period of extra-time secured DCU's place in the semi-finals yesterday.

DCU showed off the depth of their squad in Belfast, with their bench contributing 1-4 as they fought back from six points down, albeit with an extra man, to advance to the finals weekend at UCC.

Niall Moyna's side trailed by 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time, with two points each from Aidan Forker and Jerome Johnston putting St Mary's in control.

However, disaster struck for the home side when Down's Ryan Johnston received a straight red card for striking just before the break.

Forker stretched St Mary's lead to six points with a 40th-minute free.

From there, though, DCU took over and they reeled off 1-3 without reply to draw level, half-time substitute Donal Wrynn's fisted goal after 51 minutes the crucial score.

St Mary's thought they had sealed victory late on when Thomas Canavan came back on the field to kick a free but Roscommon forward Donie Smith immediately hit a superb equaliser for the Dublin college to tie the scores at 1-7 to 0-10.

The sides only managed one point apiece in the first half of extra-time.

However, St Mary's could not respond again once DCU pressed ahead in the second period of extra-time.

Lowe's second '45' of the game put them in front in the 83rd minute with points from Colm Begley and sub Simon McCoy sealing victory.
