WING-BACK Daire Conway kicked the winning point for Westmeath a minute from the end at Enniscorthy.
Westmeath had first advantage of a gale-force wind but found it difficult to break down the home defence. After Paddy Fagan had opened the Midlanders’ account with a third-minute point they had to wait until the 11th minute for their next score.
Sam Duncan floated a high ball in from midfield, and when Wexford keeper Ben Turner hesitated, Fagan reacted quickest to punch to the roof of the net.
Wexford got off the mark on 17 minutes with a Donal Shanley free. After Darren Giles responded, two further Shanley points, one a free, cut the gap to 1-2 to 0-3 at the interval.
Two Shanley frees had Wexford level within five minutes of the restart, but Jack Quinn put Westmeath back in front.
A long-range point from Jamie Carty left the sides deadlocked at 1-4 to 0-7, but in the final minute Conway stepped forward after the Wexford defence failed to clear a free to kick the match-winning point.
