Cuthbert off to perfect start as Cork cruise

CORK 3-22 LIMERICK IT 0-7

It was plain sailing for Cork and new manager Brian Cuthbert as they cruised past LIT in the McGrath Cup quarter-final in Mallow.

Despite a close-season that saw a host of big-name retirements, Cuthbert's new charges didn't disappoint him as they cut a resilient yet totally outclassed college outfit down to size with a dominant display.

Cork raced into a 1-6 to 0-0 lead by the quarter-hour and continued the onslaught till the break -- going into at half-time leading 1-15 to no score.

Stand-out performers for the Rebels were corner-back Noel Galvin, full-forward Donncha O'Connor and corner-forward John Hayes -- with the latter pairing racking up 1-8 between them.

Others out to impress were the midfield pairing of Aidan Walsh and Fintan Goold as well as one of last year's stars, wing-back James Loughrey. Kevin Crowley and Andrew O'Sullivan also chipped in with a goal apiece.

The stand-out display for LIT came from wing-back Paddy Dalton.

Cuthbert chose to empty his bench in the second half, which eventually left Cork a man short when Micheal O'Leary became the first Corkman to receive a black card. LIT lost Cian Prenderville moments later after he too fell foul of the new rules.

Cork face a firmer test next weekend when they take on UL.
