Cunningham class lifts Antrim

Antrim 1-12 Down 0-10

PADDY CUNNINGHAM'S first-half goal proved key for Antrim in Newry.

The victory wasn't enough to put the Saffrons through to the semi-finals, but it was a confidence-boosting win. Down were a point ahead early on, but Cunningham's goal after 22 minutes turned the game.

Michael Pollock teed Cunningham up to box the ball into an empty net. That put Antrim 1-3 to 0-4 ahead, and they outscored Down by 0-6 to 0-2 for the remainder of the half.

The Saffrons had six different players on the scoresheet, with newcomer Philip Maguire catching the eye, as they led by 1-9 to 0-6 at the break.

Down scored three frees after that, from Liam Doyle, Darragh O'Hanlon and Niall Madine, before CJ McGourty, Mark Sweeney and Brian Neeson confirmed Antrim's win.
