Cummins puts Galway in driving seat

Six points from Danny Cummins gave Galway their second win of the competition at Tuam Stadium yesterday.
Cummins turned on the style after Peadar Seoighe's second-half goal had edged the Sligo students ahead in the 36th minute, but eight points in a row from Galway to close out the game displayed the gulf in class.
Alan Mulholland was happy to just get across the line after a difficult opening half for the Tribesmen.
"On the whole we did well, we finished well. In the first half we found it very tough, they were well organised and hard to break down. We were two up at the break and it wasn't pretty," said Mulholland.
"Danny is an ex-IT Sligo player so he had a thing or two to prove out there. But he did well.
"It was put up to us when they got the goal and we went a point down. The encouraging thing from today was that when the pressure went on, we managed to find another gear."
After last weekend's 10-point victory over NUI Galway, Mulholland made five changes to his side, but the alterations did not seem to weaken the Tribesmen as Cummins' fourth-minute point got them up and running.
David Maye – who declined the chance to link up with Kevin Walsh's Sligo panel – landed a huge free from outside the '45' to get IT Sligo off the mark three minutes later, but Galway controlled the next 10 minutes with points from Armstrong and Michael Martin giving them a two-point lead.
Maye landed an excellent point from play after a one-two with Stephen Coen, but despite IT Sligo dominating at midfield, Mulholland's men took a 0-5 to 0-3 advantage in at the break after Armstrong and Cummins had kicked their second points.
After Seoighe rattled the net to put IT Sligo 1-3 to 0-5 ahead, the Galway forwards took control and Cummins' four second-half points were matched by Martin as Galway set up a winner-takes-all tussle with Sligo next weekend.
