Cox guides UCC into quarter-finals
UCC made the most of wind advantage to advance to the quarter-finals.
The Cork students built up a healthy half-time 1-13 to 0-2 lead, with Kerry panellist Conor Cox leading the way with six frees and this proved too much for UUJ to claw back.
Cox's accuracy was a feature of the contest at the Parnells GAA complex in Coolock and when Peter Crowley goaled to put Billy Morgan's side 1-6 to 0-0 in front, the writing was on the wall for UUJ. Paul Geaney, Cox and Gavin O'Grady added further points to make it 1-11 to 0-0 before Conor McAliskey opened UUJ's account.
He added another before the break to complete the first-half scoring.
UUJ needed early scores with the strong wind at their backs, but a determined UCC battled to win a lot of of hard ball, working it well into the wind and depriving the Ulster side of the possession they needed.
Paul Devlin hit three points and Tyrone's Richie Donnelly landed a '45,' but O'Grady responded for UCC and, with UUJ shooting 10 wides in the second-half, there was no way back.
