Cork close on final spot

Goals in the first five minutes from John Hayes and Fintan Goold set Cork on the road to victory -- and a probable league final -- spot at Celtic Park last night.
A typically audacious Eoin Bradley point saw Derry open the scoring but then Cork took over. Hayes drilled home a penalty following Fergal Doherty's foul on Derek Kavanagh, and the Derry net was bulging again when Goold fired past Barry Gillis after Paul Kerrigan's searing run.
Derry initially responded in fine fashion, with Paddy Bradley pointing from wide to spark a string of scores -- points from Michael Bateson, Paddy Bradley (twice), Charlie Kielt, Eoin Bradley and Doherty made it 0-8 to 2-1.
Falling behind seemed to sting Cork back into action and they finished the half with a flourish as Aidan Walsh, Daniel Goulding, Paddy Kelly and Kerrigan pointed to make it 2-5 to 0-8 at the break.
Two Paddy Bradley frees gave Derry hope but with Kerrigan running the Derry back line ragged, back roared Cork with points from Kerrigan and Goold. Bradley replied but Goold's free and a Nicholas O'Leary point stretched the lead to 2-9 to 0-11.
Derry battled manfully and scores from Joe Diver, Raymond Wilkinson and a Bradley free closed the gap to a point but Charlie Kielt and Mark Lynch were off target with late efforts from range as Cork hung on to leave Derry contemplating life in Division 2.
