Corcoran stands tall as Roscommon take title

Roscommon 1-9 Galway 0-6

Roscommon claimed their first Connacht crown at this level since 2006 with a powerful display against Galway at Dr Hyde Park.

The winners laid the foundations for their success during a composed first-half display against a howling gale.

They dominated possession, mainly through the excellent Thomas Corcoran in midfield, and totally snuffed out the Galway challenge. It was a case of keeping the visitors at arm's length in the second period and Roscommon duly closed out the game in comfortable fashion to earn their 12th provincial crown and their first in 'The Hyde'.

Galway made a bright start and wing-back Cathal Mulryan clipped over a point in the first minute. Amazingly, they wouldn't score again for the rest of the half with the wind behind them.

Shane Maughan was off target from a few frees as confidence began to drain.

Roscommon grew in stature and impressive corner-forward Donie Smith got his side off the mark with a 16th-minute free. Corcoran nailed two similar frees from 30 metres before the game's defining score arrived in the 23rd minute.

Corcoran powered his way through the middle, laying off the ball to Liam Conlon who unselfishly squared possession for full-forward Enda Lannon to find the net. Corcoran added a free to leave his side 1-4 to 0-1 ahead at the break.

Galway were much improved in the second half but they weren't able to get the goal they needed.

Indeed the margin could have been greater but the home side were a little wayward with their shooting. Galway's Conor Rabbitte, Shane Walsh and Maughan registered points but Corcoran, Smith and substitute Kevin Finn added to Roscommon's tally to confirm Ross Shannon's side as champions.
