Connerton relief after vital victory
Longford 1-17 Sligo 2-9
Longford claimed a valuable two points with a fully deserved five-point defeat of Sligo in Markievicz Park.
Denis Connerton's side bounced back from the concession of two first-half Brian Egan goals to lead by three at the break, 1-10 to 2-4.
They also hit the first four points of the second period to lead by seven entering the final quarter of the match.
Four points in a row from the Yeats men gave the home support some hope, but Brian Kavanagh and Robbie Smyth pointed frees to stretch Longford's lead again, and they hung on despite having Kavanagh and Brian Farrell sent off in the closing stages.
Egan finished calmly to the net for the opening goal on five minutes after some great build-up play from Niall Murphy, Pat Hughes and Mark Breheny.
The Tourlestrane man netted again on 18 minutes after he was given two bites of the cherry close to goal, but Longford dominated for large parts otherwise and had six different players on the scoresheet by half-time, with substitute Darren Gallagher netting their goal on 25 minutes.
Longford manager Connerton felt it was an important win.
"Our aim is to stay in the division and this win helps us out a lot in that regard," said Connerton. "It is a cut-throat division so every point is vital."
