Rovers were in dreamland in the first half as two Diarmuid Foley goals in the space of two minutes had them 2-1 to 0-1 clear, but Rovers then endured a 16-minute barren spell on the scoreboard.

Commercials, who won their 16th title, worked their way back into contention by half-time, 2-3 to 0-7 adrift.

Rovers, chasing glory for the first time since 2009, were then boosted by a bizarre Liam Boland goal in the 36th minute, as his long-range free bounced over the head of stranded goalkeeper Paul Nolan and into the net.

Ciaran Kenrick's 45 had Rovers six clear again - 3-4 to 0-7 - but they would manage just a single point for the remainder of the game, and Boland was sent off for a second bookable offence in the final minute.

Commercials, driven forward by man of the match Seamus Kennedy, restored parity with 11 minutes remaining before Jason Lonergan and Ian Barnes opened up a two-point lead in an entertaining decider watched by 976 spectators.
