Colman's rally to reclaim title

St Colman's Newry 2-10 St Jarlath's Tuam 0-15

Holders St Colman's retained the Hogan Cup title with a narrow win in a thrilling Croke Park decider, surviving a furious second-half comeback by St Jarlath's to win by a single point.

The Down school went six points ahead with two goals in the opening 11 minutes. First Jack Haughey's dipping shot deceived goalkeeper James Healy, then Jerome Johnston collected Colman Doyle's pass and skipped past two tackles to plant the ball in the net.

But the Connacht lads played their way into contention, with Shane Walsh striking accurately from frees.

Caolan Mooney hit four Newry points, but three superb efforts from play in the final four minutes of the half from Sean Silke narrowed the gap to a single point.

St Colman's led by 2-4 to 0-8 at the break, but had to defend for long stretches of the second half, as a string of points from Walsh, from frees and play, helped Jarlath's take the lead.

But inspirational skipper Connor Gough saw Colman's regain control, and late scores from Mooney, Shay McArdle and Jerome Johnston saw them deny the Galway college a 13th All-Ireland title.
