Coen strikes late to break Sligo hearts
Mayo 2-8 Sligo 2-5
Darren Coen struck 1-1 in added time to break Sligo hearts and send defending champions Mayo into the final.
Coen coolly converted a penalty in the third minute of added time and tapped over a free a minute later to give him a tally of 1-5.
Sligo thought they had done enough when defender Michael Gordon finished a slick attack for a sumptuous goal that put the home side a point clear, 2-5 to 1-7, in the last minute of normal time.
Before their late flourish, the holders kicked 10 wides, eight in the second-half when playing with the wind.
Mayo, who led 1-5 to 1-2 at half-time, failed to score for 25 minutes in the second half and were almost undone by a Sligo recovery that yielded 1-3.
Mayo, sharper in front of goal in the first-half, netted after 19 minutes when Ronan Malee buried a shot and they were denied at least three other goals during a scrappy opening half before coming good late on.
