His clubmate Colm Begley is also free to play for Ireland. That will come as a major boost as the Laois man, who spent a few years playing Australian Rules prior to returning home, has broad experience of the mixed game.

The Irish squad arrived in Australia in staggered stages over the weekend and will have their first official training session today.

They were due to play a practice session against a local team in Melbourne tomorrow, but Irish manager Anthony Tohill has decided against that.

Instead, the squad will work together over the next few days in preparation for the opening match of the two-Test series in Melbourne on Friday.
