Clinical Carlow survive late London fightback
Carlow 4-4 London 1-11
Relieved Carlow survived a late London surge to run out two-point winners in this Division 4 clash.
The visitors started brightly in miserable conditions and raised three green flags through a brace from Sean Gannon and a neat penalty from John Murphy. Turlough O'Brien's side led 3-2 to 0-5 at the interval and turning with the wind, the second half held the promise of more goals.
The Exiles were short on composure as well as scores, but that changed with the introduction of Mark Gottsche. The midfielder gave London shape and renewed focus, and Scott Conroy and Adrian Moyles nibbled away at Carlow's lead. Even JJ Smith's palmed finish on 41 minutes failed to halt their momentum.
Driven on by Gottsche, London were within a score of victory after Eoin Murray's late goal and another Conroy point.
"I'm very disappointed with our second-half performance," said O'Brien. "We're hoping to be in the promotion push at the end of this league and those points are very valuable here today. It was a lesson for us that second half - we took our foot off the pedal and we nearly got caught."
