Champions Vincent's knocked out as Corofin seal final place
COROFIN 1-14 ST VINCENT'S 1-9
GALWAY'S Corofin ended the reign of AIB All-Ireland club champions St Vincent's in a terrific contest at Tullamore today.
Corofin will now go forward to a St Patrick's Day final against the winner's of the Austin Stacks v Slaughtneil game to be played at Portlaoise tomorrow.
A pulsating first half ended with the Galway side leading by 1-8 to 1-6, with a hectic last six minutes of the half providing the big drama.
St Vincent's were lucky not to have conceded two goals, first when goalie Michael Savage blocked a goal-bound shot by Martin Farragher for a 45, and later when Ian Burke took a point when one-on-one with Savage.
But a penalty awarded in 23rd minute seemed destined to give Corofin the green flag they deserved.
Brendan Egan fouled Gary Sice, and was lucky not to get a card, but the penalty was awarded.
Gary Delaney went for a shot high into the top corner of the net, only to see the ball rebound off the crossbar.
Not only was that a let-off for Vincent's, but they added insult to injury by going downfield and winning a penalty when Corofin defender Kieran Fitzgerald fouled Ciaran Dorney.
Tomas Quinn neatly slotted the ball home to leave the score after 25 minutes at 1-5 to Vincent's and 0-7 for Corofin.
Michael Lundy added a point for the Galway side and Brendan Egan got one for Vincent's to end the first half scoring.
Corofin stretched their lead to five points as Lundy, and Burke (2) brought them to 1-11 within eight minutes of the re-start.
Diarmuid Connolly got Vincent's back on the scoreboard with a long range point in the 39th minute, and clipped over another score from a free two minutes later.
Quinn pushed Vincent's to 1-9 with a point from a free, but at the other end, Corofin's Kieran McGrath made a great block to deny Ruairi Trainor a goal.
Ian Burke relieved the pressure on Corofin with a 50th minute score to make it 1-12 to 1-9 in his team's favour.
Gary Sice from a free in the 58th minute and Martin Farragher from play further added to Vincent's agony.
