Carey keeps holders DCU on course

Holders DCU remain on course to retain their title as they took second-half control to score an impressive victory over hosts IT Carlow last night.
In ideal weather conditions, the first half went score for score and the sides were tied 0-5 apiece at half-time with no real indication that DCU would subsequently assume such a degree of superiority.
Four unanswered points within eight minutes of the restart from Monaghan's Shane Carey from three frees and one from play by Enda Smith of Roscommon, gave DCU a strong grip which they never relinquished.
Playing some eye-catching football, the holders kept picking off their scores throughout the half. Sub David Mannix scored a booming point from play within seconds of joining the action and followed quickly with another from play. Tipperary's Steven O'Brien, a late first-half substitute, also registered a second-half point.
The home attack was outgunned by an impressive DCU defence which only conceded two second half points from frees by Chris Conroy (Cavan) and, overall, the home side will have few complaints as Carey hit 0-7 for the winners.
