CARBERY 1-11 BISHOPSTOWN 0-7 Cork SFC Final WEST-CORK side Carbery bridged a 33-year gap when they overcame Bishopstown to win the Cork senior football championship title for the first time since 1971 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday.
Favoured by a stiff breeze in the first half, the divisional team were very quick to stamp their authority on the game, with Micheal O'Sullivan and Kevin McMahon giving them a clear advantage at midfield.
Veteran full-forward Pat Hegarty caused all sorts of problems for the Bishopstown defence, and John Hayes also showed up well on the '40' as Carbery knocked over four answered points inside 18 minutes.
James O'Shea, the only Bishopstown forward to make any sort of an impact, got the losers off the mark two minutes later, but then came a goal from Alan O'Connor that put Carbery firmly in the driving seat.
O'Connor was on hand to pounce after Frank Arundel had steered Micheal O'Sullivan's long-range free into his path. Carbery continued to dictate matters and were 1-5 to 0-2 ahead at half-time.
Early second-half points from centre-back Sean Levis and Pat Hegarty suggested that there was going to be no change in the pattern of the play after the break.
But Bishopstown, seeking their first title and contesting their second final in three years, staged a mini-rival, thanks primarily to the accuracy of Kerrymen Jack Ferriter from frees.
The gap was down to to four points, 1-7 to 0-6, after substitute Shane Conlisk bagged a fourth point in a row for Bishopstown in the 42nd minute.
But Carbery replied with a brace from John Hayes and Frank Arundel, and they raised the tempo again in the last quarter to run out decisive winners, although both James O'Shea and Brian Cuthbert went close with goal chances for Bishopstown before the finish.
