ROSCOMMON 2-6

Newly-promoted Fermanagh made it two wins from two in NFL Division 3 with a comfortable win over Roscommon last night.

Goals in each half from Daryl Keenan and Paul Ward helped Peter Canavan's team to see off a depleted Rossies side in Brewster Park.

Roscommon badly missed their contingent from Connacht champions St Brigid's as Fermanagh made all the running. The hosts led by 1-5 to 0-3 at the end of a first half memorable for the superb dead-ball kicking of Sean Quigley.

The Roslea forward kicked four frees off the ground, two of them from over 50 metres, as well as one from an acute angle near the sideline.

Both teams tried hard but the game was played at a pedestrian pace with a lot of lateral passing. One bright note was the sparkling move which led to Daryl Keenan's goal in the 16th minute.

When a Roscommon attack broke down, Fermanagh countered at speed. Shane McCabe spotted Keenan's run inside and his clever chip cut out three defenders. Keenan gathered the ball, rounded Geoffrey Claffey and tapped the ball into an empty net.

There was no score for Fermanagh until Quigley's free in the 10th minute, and there was no point scored from play until Eoin Donnelly impressively drilled the ball over the bar in the 25th minute. Neither side favoured the direct approach but one such move paid dividends for Roscommon. Cathal Cregg fed Fintan Cregg with a long ball inside and he delivered a badly-needed point for the visitors.

Fermanagh's five-point half-time lead was stretched to eight after Paul Ward's goal in the 38th minute. But Roscommon rallied with 1-2 inside five minutes, Donie Smith reacting quickest to drill the ball into the far corner after 41 minutes.

Fermanagh stopped the rot with three points in as many minutes from Daryl Keenan, Shane McCabe and Quigley's first from play to lead by 2-8 to 1-5. Erne midfielder Ryan Jones was dismissed for two bookings nine minutes from the end, by which stage the result was no longer in doubt. Michael Finneran added a consolation goal for the Rossies in injury-time.
