Callinan helps Rossies hold Galway at bay
Roscommon 1-16 Galway 2-10 EirGrid Connacht U-21
Defending champions Roscommon survived a late Galway comeback to set up a semi-final against Sligo.
The Tribesmen finished the match with 13 men, having lost Michael Daly to a second yellow card on the stroke of half time and Joseph Donnellan to a black card in the 48th minute when they had used their six substitutes.
A slicker Roscommon side kept their noses in front with the full-forward line of Diarmuid Murtagh, Hubert Darcy and Cathal Callinan contributing 1-8 between them.
The home side's cause was helped by a 12th-minute penalty converted by Diarmuid Murtagh, but Galway drew level with points from Eamon Brannigan, Paul Mannion (free) and Peter Cooke ('45').
The Rossies then forged ahead, taking a 1-7 to 0-5 interval lead courtesy of three points from play from the excellent Callinan plus scores from defenders Fergal Lennon and Jack Connaughton.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Galway made a blistering start to the second half and Donnellan goaled within a minute of the resumption.
But Roscommon didn't panic and points from Murtagh (free), Callinan, Darcy (2) and Kevin Farrell put them in the driving seat.
Galway put the cat among the pigeons with a goal from corner-back Rory Green but the third goal they craved didn't arrive.
