Cadogan to focus on football as Hickey calls time

CORK dual star Eoin Cadogan last night ended speculation on his future by committing solely to the county footballers for 2013.
"I have taken this decision very reluctantly but after a period of reflection over the winter and a personal commitment to an education programme, I will not be in a position this year to meet the demands of both codes," Cadogan said last night.
The full-back is the second Rebel dual player to choose football over hurling, following the decision of Castlehaven's Damien Cahalane to throw his lot in with Conor Counihan's squad this year.
"I would like to thank all those who have supported my dual commitments. I will be making no further comment on my decision," Cadogan added.
He recently returned from a trip to Australia and is named at full-back in the Cork football team for today's McGrath Cup quarter-final against Tipperary. He has been involved with both the hurling and football squads for the last number of years.
Meanwhile, Kilkenny star Noel Hickey has called time on his glittering senior inter-county hurling career during which he won a record nine senior All-Ireland medals.
The Dunnamaggin defender, who made 47 senior championship appearances for the county, told manager Brian Cody on Friday night that he was quitting, only weeks after suggesting he was ready to return to help the Cats in their drive to retain the National League and All-Ireland titles.
"I know now is the time for me to go," Hickey said last night, only days after returning from the players' holiday in New York and Jamaica.
The Dunnamaggin defender, who turned 32 on December 22, joined the Kilkenny panel in 2000. He won a ninth All-Ireland along with Henry Shefflin last September. He won seven National Leagues and three All Star awards, the last in 2008. He was also the Young Hurler of the Year in 2000.
"I leave with no regrets," Hickey added. "I got much more out of the game than I could ever have imagined. I have played with and against some of the best, and now is a good time for me to go."
