Brosnan shines to send Wexford into decider
IMPRESSIVE Wexford fashioned a fully deserved six-point victory over Westmeath in Gorey yesterday afternoon.
With corner-forward Ben Brosnan in sparkling form, shooting a personal tally of 1-6, Wexford should have had the game wrapped up by the interval, but wayward finishing saw them waste numerous chances.
While Westmeath, playing into the breeze, strove valiantly to remain in touch through fine points from James Durcan with two and Gavin Hoey, it was Brosnan who chipped in with five first-half points. Three more from the other corner-forward, Paddy Byrne, gave the home side a 0-8 to 0-3 lead at the interval.
Denis Glennon was introduced for the second half and brought about an immediate improvement in Westmeath's play, kicking three fine points.
With further efforts from Paul Greville and Stephen Bracken they had reduced the deficit to 0-10 to 0-8 with 19 minutes remaining.
But that was as good as it got for Westmeath, whose finishing deteriorated in the closing stages. An Aindreas Doyle point and a punched 70th-minute goal from Brosnan secured a final clash for Wexford against neighbours Carlow.
