Boss Rooney thrilled to keep Sligo fighting on two fronts
Sligo1-14 Roscommon 3-5
For the first time since 1954 Sligo will contest Connacht minor and senior finals in the same campaign.
With Niall Carew's seniors already through to the decider, Aidan Rooney's minor outfit followed suit as they qualified for a July 19 date with Galway.
Winning boss Rooney was delighted, saying:
"We had the game won twice, maybe three times - so I delighted to get across the line."
It was a nervy win for Sligo as they sloppily let slip a seven-point lead, 1-10 to 1-3, as battling Roscommon drew level in the 59th minute at Kiltoom when the excellent Brian Stack netted his side's third goal.
But Sligo, for whom pacy corner-forward Kyle Cawley scored 1-3, secured the win with three quickfire points in two minutes of added time.
Both sides squandered chances - Sligo hit 11 wides and Roscommon nine - but the home side will rue a missed goal in first-half added time, when Brian Stack's goalbound effort hit the post, while Luke Carty's impact was cut short when the substitute picked up a first-half black card two minutes after coming on.
Ex-Leitrim player Rooney, nephew of Sligo GAA legend Mickey Kearins, added: "That win will stand to our guys - they had to dig really deep at the end of it and I'm glad they did because it would have been very disappointing to lose having conceded a seven-point lead."
