Bolger's nuggets of wisdom
Horse training and breeding genius Jim Bolger, who is a 'mad' GAA fan, gave a very interesting talk to the National Games Development Conference in front of an audience of around 700 people in Croke Park on Saturday.
The great Coolcullen-based handler made several comparisons between training and producing equine and football and hurling winners.
The will to win that often propels a horse to a short-head victory is the same that can drive the great players in GAA, and the modern developments of science in these sports also bear many similarities.
Bolger also complimented Dubs follower Jim Reilly, who has been his stable's farrier for around 35 years – nearly as long as Mick O'Dwyer has been training footballers, and with nearly as much success.
For the many GAA coaches in attendance, Bolger's insistence on the importance of recovery time for injuries in horses must surely have struck a chord.
