UCD withstood a late Meath barrage to rekindle their O'Byrne Cup hopes in Simonstown last night.

Hosts Meath left themselves with a lot to do when they failed to capitalise on a strong wind in the first half and led by just 0-8 to 1-3.

In extremely difficult conditions Cavan's Tom Hayes squeezed in a fifth-minute goal for UCD.

Meath had more of the play but just couldn't penetrate a well organised defence in the second half and UCD played smart to turn over ball consistently and hit them on the break.

Eoin Lowry made an impact off the bench, drawing a great save from Paddy O'Rourke after hitting an equaliser on 50 minutes.

Colm Basquel, fresh from Leinster club success with Ballyboden St Enda's, profited from one of the turnover when he prodded a goal in the 58th minute from Hayes' good approach work.

It was the key score as, with the conditions worsening, a three point lead (2-7 to 0-10) was always going to be difficult to haul in.

Liam Casey strengthened the lead to four before Donal Lenihan cut it to three again. UCD substitute Luke Kelly was sent off late on for a second yellow card.

It ended with Donal Keogan rebounding a shot off the crossbar, the seventh time Meath had struck the woodwork on the night.
