Derry have appointed their former All-Ireland winner Damien Barton as senior football manager in succession to Brian McIver.

McIver stepped down after three years in charge following the Championship exit to Galway in July.

Barton was centre-forward when Derry won the All-Ireland title in 1993. He has managed a number of club teams across Ulster including former Down kingpins Burren, and Slaughtneil and Ballinderry in his native county.

Barton is the second member of Eamonn Coleman's team to take the reins in the county. Damien Cassidy was in charge from 2009 to 2010.

He was approved at a county board meeting last night.
