Aviva fails to hit the right pitch

Eugene Magee

I was amused to observe the state of the playing surface at the Aviva Stadium when Leinster played Munster before a crowd of 46,000.

Apparently the concert of pop star Lady Gaga did so much damage to parts of the pitch that it had to be resurfaced.

Whatever happened, possibly the recent heavy rain, part of the new sodding did not knit very well and we had the unusual sight of portions of turf being thrown loose, much to the annoyance, I would imagine, of some players.

We haven't had any such problems at Croke Park in recent times even when the entire playing area has been replaced.

But then of course, we know the GAA crowd all come from the country and would be experts on all farming matters.

Sure, some of those rugby lads have probably never used a spade or a loy in their lives.
