Ashe quits kildare post
Kildare GAA was last night stunned by the resignation of county chairman Padraig Ashe, writes Martin Breheny.
Family reasons were cited for his surprise departure which comes in the early stages of his second year at the helm. However, his resignation emerged amid reports of tension in Kildare over the club programme and how it would be impacted upon by the county squad's requirements.
Ashe did not attend last night's County Board meeting. His resignation at this stage of the season will have shocked Kildare clubs and county supporters, especially if background tensions were as influential in his decision as is being suggested locally.
John McMahon is current vice-chairman but whether he is interested in the top job remains to be seen. Central Council delegate Marty McEvoy could also be in the running.
