The Meath youngsters were always on top and would have won by a far bigger margin had they not kicked 13 wides.

Ashbourne set the tone for the game as early as the fourth minute when centre-back and captain Conor Carton burst through the middle and crashed a great shot to the roof of the net.

Gallen hit back to cut the gap to the minimum, but Ashbourne twice restored their one-goal lead before two late Gallen points left just one between them at half-time, 1-3 to 0-5.

Control

Ashbourne took complete control in the second half and held their opponents scoreless, but they found scores hard to come by as the wides began to mount up.

The Offaly side just couldn't get into the game and too often sent aimless balls into their forward line which were easily dealt with by the Ashbourne defence.

There was still only two points between the sides early in the final quarter and, despite being outplayed, Gallen were still in the contest, but three unanswered points in a five-minute spell finally broke their resistance and sent the Royal representatives through to the semi-final.
