Ardnaree clinch first junior title
Ardnaree 1-11 Clifden 1-7 Connacht JFC final
THE club that gave us Mayo legend, ‘Jinking Joe’ Corcoran, clinched their first provincial junior club title at MacHale Park, Castlebar where they proved a class above Galway champions, Clifden, in testing conditions.
A late surge from Clifden only put a more respectable look to the score, an injury-time penalty from Ger Gibbons was part of the 1-3 Clifden hit in the closing stages, having trailed by 10 points.
A well-worked goal, finished by Ronan Doherty, was the crucial score of the first half as Ardnaree led at the break by 1-6 to 0-3.
Two points from play from centre-back Pat Lacken stamped Ardnaree’s authority on the half as Clifden, playing into a strong breeze, struggled to get scores, centre-back Mike O’Toole with the pick of their three first-half points.
