KILDARE have been dealt a bad blow ahead of Sunday's Leinster SFC quarter-final after new corner-forward star Darroch Mulhall was ruled out by appendicitis.

The 22-year-old from Athy had established himself as a constant starter during Jason Ryan's first year in charge and was regarded as an automatic choice against Louth.

He was Kildare's  topscorer, on 1-6 (3f), when they lost to Dublin by 10 points in the league and his free-taking ability has helped to compensate for the retirement of Johnny Doyle.

Mulhall scored seven points against Westmeath in the Lilywhites’ final league match and racked up 1-28 in Division One when he started in all seven games during their run to relegation.

But he fell ill in the last few days and tweeted from his hospital bed this morning: "#appendixless #footballless. That's life. Roll on the next match."
