A Ladies county final in Limerick has been scheduled for the bizarre time of 9am this Saturday.

Gerald Griffins and Groody Gaels are due to meet in the Junior football championship final but because of a clash with a women's rugby tournament, of which some of the Groody Gaels panel are involved, an alternative date was sought.

With no agreement reached between the two clubs, the Limerick county board pencilled the fixture in for 9am on Saturday in Knockainey which is a one-hour drive from the Loughill-Ballyhahill parish of Gerald Griffins and 35 minutes away for Groody Gaels.

"All our girls had worked around the 16th and some will be going away on holidays," Martina O'Brien from Gerald Griffins told Independent.ie.

"We had to pay for a girl to come home from holidays last year and we can't do that again this year.

"We are playing it. It means getting up at 6am for a one-hour drive to prepare for the game. We will have to be there for eight.

"This is coming back on us as we can't change the date but that is unfair. Some of our girls are going travelling and we can't finance a trip home for them."

Gerald Griffins had arranged for a bus to ferry their underage supporters to the match but have now cancelled those plans.

"We have told our supporters we don't expect them to travel. We had to cancel a bus to take our underage players," added O'Brien.

"We find it disappointing to be shown this kind of respect and it's disappointing that they find 9am an acceptable time."

A statement from the Limerick County Board read: "At the August county board meeting, Groody Gaels notified all clubs that due to clash with an international women’s rugby tournament, Groody Gaels would request a new date for the junior final, should Groody Gaels reach the final.

"Despite several requests from Limerick Ladies Football Board and protracted discussions at the September County Board meeting, their opponents Gerald Griffins could not accommodate any of several suggested new dates, between September 10 and December 31- citing player availability.

"The county board were left with no option but to hold the final on September 16. In light of this, and to give both teams the best opportunity to field at full strength, the final has been fixed for 9am on Saturday September 16."
