Aidan O’Shea has been sensationally left out of the announced Mayo team for Sunday’s Connacht championship quarter-final against Sligo in Castlebar.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the team which has been released will actually take the field.

O’Shea damaged his ankle while training with the Sligo All Star basketball team in January and didn’t start any of Mayo’s Allianz League games though he appeared as a substitute at the latter end of the campaign.

The only newcomer on the side is 2016 All-Ireland U-21 medal winner Fergal Boland who starts at wing forward.

Having missed most of last season through injury, a fit again Ger Cafferkey returns at full back but All Star corner back Brendan Harrison is ruled out through injury.

In total there are five changes to the team which started the 2016 All Ireland final replay defeat with David Clarke, Chris Barrett, Ger Cafferkey, Fergal Boland and Conor O'Shea – a younger brother of Aidan O’Shea - replacing Robbie Hennelly, Brendan Harrison, Donal Vaughan, Aidan O'Shea and Jason Doherty.

The announced team is: D Clarke; C Barrett, G Cafferkey, K Higgins; C Boyle, L Keegan, P Durcan; S O’Shea, T Parsons, F Boland, D O’Connor, C O’Shea; K McLoughlin, C O’Connor (capt), A Moran.
