Two GAA autobiographies feature in the shortlist of five for this year's eir Sports Book of the Year.

Cathal McCarron's 'Out of Control (Christy O'Connor) and Kieran Donaghy's 'What Do You Think of That?' (Kieran Shannon) are in the mix along with two other autobiographies - Paul O'Connell's 'The Battle' (Alan English) and Rob Heffernan's 'Walking Tall' (Ger Cromwell) - and the 'Spirit of '58' written by Evan Marshall.

The five, whose authors will be subject of five separate specialist programmes broadcast on eir Sport detailing their respective books, are in with a chance of landing the overall prize of €1,500 cash, a specially commissioned trophy and €10,000 worth of TV advertising on eir Sport

Last year's award went to the acclaimed 'Dub Sub Confidential', which was the story of former Dublin sub goalkeeper John Leonard, and this year's winner will be announced on December 5.

Brian Quinn, operations director of eir Sport, said: "It was a difficult task for the judging panel to narrow it down to five contenders this year. This shortlist reflects a diversity of writing styles and subject matters."
