Sweeney strike enough to complete Sligo recovery
Kenneth Sweeney's excellent goal was the catalyst for Sligo's second-half recovery that proved too much for a dogged Cavan at Markievicz Park.
The improving full-forward, who provided Sligo's main attacking threat along with their only other scorers on the day, newcomer Colm McGee and Mark Breheny, deftly fisted home a much-needed goal with five minutes left.
Sweeney's goal was followed by a hat-trick of points from the wily Breheny, whose second-half renaissance was also pivotal.
Cavan, who led 0-8 to 0-7 at the break, had done well in patches, but Cian Mackey proved their most consistent attacker along with Gareth Smith. Still, a 0-13 to 0-10 lead with 25 minutes of the second half played suggested that the visitors were going to further examine Sligo's resilience.
However, the winners were a transformed side for the latter stages of the second half, with substitutes Alan Costello and Stephen Coen working hard to help their team edge the contest.
