Sweeney stars for Tipperary
Tipperary got the defence of their title off to a good start at Dungarvan last night.
The star of the show was corner-forward Conor Sweeney, who finished with a haul of 1-6.
Peter Acheson was a reliable ball-winner in midfield and the champions opened up a two-point lead inside four minutes, with Aldo Matassa and David Butler on target.
In the 12th minute Sweeney grabbed a goal from 12 yards, but Waterford did reply with an excellent goal of their own through David Phelan.
Tipperary finished the half strongly and points from Sweeney, David McGrath, Butler and Acheson left them four points in front at the break.
Tipperary dominated a poor second half and added seven points to lead by 1-14 to 1-3 as the game entered injury-time.
Waterford did not get their first point of the second half until David Grey scored two minutes into stoppage-time.
