St Mel's pay for penalty

Athlone CC 1-11
St Mel's, Longford 2-3

Athlone Community College advanced to the second round with a comfortable win over St Mel's, Longford, in Athlone yesterday.

The winners were powered by an impressive midfield duo of Padraig Corbett and James Shaughnessy and were full value for a 0-5 to 0-0 lead with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Then, totally against the run of play, a fortuitous goal from Brian Walsh and a well-taken second from Stephen McLoughlin left the losers a point to the good by the 28th minute.

However, points from David Brookes and Ray Connellan got the home side back on track and they went in at the half-time interval leading by 0-7 to 2-0.

On the resumption, two converted frees from Emmett Kenny increased Athlone's lead before Ciaran Farrell scored St Mel's only point from play midway through the half.

When Brookes was fouled as he bore down on goal in the 46th minute, Kenny expertly dispatched the resultant penalty to the net to ensure Athlone ran out comfortable winners.
