A string of seven unanswered points at the start of the second half set Athlone IT on the road to a deserved victory over a disappointing Carlow side in this O'Byrne Cup tie, played in particularly difficult conditions at the Carlow IT grounds.

Carlow made a good start and were 0-4 to 0-1 in front before conceding a levelling goal in the 14th minute from Dublin's Adam Caul.

The home side, with Seamus Kinsella prominent in attack, went on to lead 0-10 to 1-5 at half-time in the driving rain.

But with Roscommon's Cathal Shine outstanding at midfield, the students were dominant for the opening 20 minutes of the second half and they turned a two-point deficit into a five-point lead.

Shine was dominant from play and clinical from placed balls, while right half-back Tom Mooney, full-forward Alan Coffey and centre-forward Kieran Martin (who scored 0-3 from play) all raised white flags as the college boys gradually took control.

Carlow depended greatly on star player Brendan Murphy but after a promising first half, they faded badly.

The game was in the 22nd minute of the second period before home county right full-forward Paul Broderick recorded their first score of the half, from a free.

Hopes were raised when Anthony Rainbow's men cut the deficit with a goal (l-13 to 0-13) with 10 minutes left, but the visitors finished strongly with points from Coffey and Kieran Martin.
