Mayo retained their title after a scrappy replay at Dr Hyde Park yesterday. It was a poor day all round for Roscommon who looked like a team who knew they had left it behind them the previous Sunday.
The crucial goal came in the 34th minute when Mayo midfielder Danny Kirby fired home from 15 metres out. The sides were level up to that stage, but the goal shattered the Rossies and they only managed one extra point for the rest of the final. A Cillian O'Connor free on 42 minutes put Mayo four ahead. More scores followed from Andrew Farrell (two) and another from O'Connor to give the winners a six-point victory.
The first-half had been messy with Roscommon struggling for scores. Two frees from O'Connor and a point from play by Farrell gave Mayo a 0-3 to 0-1 lead, but Roscommon replied in the closing minutes with two good points from play. The Rossies managed two more points but inevitably it was Mayo who powered to victory to take home the Tom Kilcoyne Cup.
