WICKLOW are the latest county board who will have to investigate an assault on a referee after one of their match officials was struck by an umbrella.

Referee Pat Dunne was hit, allegedly by an Enniskerry supporter, after Enniskerry had beaten Blessington by 3-6 to 1-9 in a Junior A football championship game in Laragh last weekend.

After the game, the referee was returning to the dressing-room and had just taken out his notebook to make some notes when the assault occurred.

The notebook was knocked from his grasp when he was struck on the back of both hands by an umbrella, and he suffered some bruising to his knuckles.

It is understood that he will include full details of the incident in his match report, meaning the Wicklow Competitions Control Committee will investigate it fully.

There was a brief scuffle five minutes from the end of the game, which resulted in an Enniskerry player being sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
