Paddy's Day perfect fit for finals
THERE'S a solid argument for completing the AIB All-Ireland club championships pre-Christmas, thus running off all competitions in the same calendar year.
However, a solid case can't compete with a compelling case and after two more gripping senior finals and a great atmosphere in Croke Park on St Patrick's Day, it would be unwise to tamper with a successful formula.
A crowd of almost 30,000 for two club games on a cold day suggests that the St Patrick's Day atmosphere is a significant factor in the appeal of the finals.
And with new champions being crowned – St Thomas' and St Brigid's – after two close games, this year's deciders have played their part in further promoting the competition and, indeed, its niche as a major St Patrick's Day attraction.
Best leave it so, rather than trying to shoehorn the semi-finals/finals into dark December.
