O'Mahony's Mayo bounce back

Mayo 2-20 IT Sligo 0-7

IT Sligo 0-7

In the wind and rain at Ballinode, Mayo superbly bounced back from their opening-round defeat to NUIG when thrashing IT Sligo by 19 points in this one-sided Section 'A' encounter.

John O'Mahony's charges comfortably led by eight points, 0-10 to 0-2, at the end of a wind-assisted first-half that they dominated.

Goals from Austin O'Malley and Michael Sweeney, both well finished from close-range, were the pick of Mayo's 11 second-half scores and their 20th point was the fifth of the afternoon for the lively Barry Regan.

The few Mayo fans that travelled to the Sligo venue will have learned little although 22 scores and nine different scorers represented a decent day's work.

Enda Kenny scored three of the home side's seven points but he was one of four IT Sligo players to be yellow-carded.

The students did improve in the second-half -- substitute Ciaran Flynn fired over a couple of fine points -- but there were few, if any, impressive performances from the home side.

The only Mayo player to be yellow-carded was Aidan Kilcoyne -- a minute into the second-half -- as Leitrim referee Frank Flynn was sensible in his interpretation of the new disciplinary rules.
