St Peter's, Wexford produced the shock of the second round as they edged past St Pat's, Navan in Baltinglass yesterday.

Goals in either half proved vital for the Wexford town school, with Jamie Carty and Kevin O'Connor applying book-ends to their scoring tally with goals.

They were full value for their win. Playing with a strong breeze, St Peter's moved the ball cleverly and with pace and, despite falling behind to David Dillon's early point, they hit back with a couple from Donal Shanley and the opening goal from full-forward Carty.

Indeed, with 10 wides as opposed to their opponents zero, and with Carty being denied by fine stops on two further occasions, the team from the south east could have been out of sight at the break and not just 1-2 to 0-3 to the good.

They were made to pay for that profligacy as St Pat's took the lead (0-6 to 1-2) with three points in 11 second-half minutes -- Niall Lyons grabbing a brace.

Having dispatched their opponents with ease in last year's championship, they looked on course for a repeat.

However, they would fail to register again and points by Shanley and Neil Rossiter were added to by a fantastically taken O'Connor goal to ease St Peter's into the next round.
