O'Connor keeps Sceilge on double trail
Thursday November 12 2009
REIGNING Hogan Cup champions Colaiste na Sceilge are safely through to the quarter-finals of the Corn Ui Mhuiri Munster senior football colleges' championship after a 1-13 to 0-2 hammering of Colaiste Chriost Ri yesterday.
The defending Munster and All-Ireland colleges kingpins had far too much class, guile and experience for the Cork school in Rathmore, despite incessant wind and rain that could have turned the clash into a lottery.
Na Sceilge, coached by Kerry boss Jack O'Connor, racked up 1-5 inside the opening seven minutes and Chriost Ri never recovered. Early points from Barry O'Dwyer and Stephen O'Dwyer (two) were followed up by an Ian Galvin goal five minutes in after a super one-two with Eanna O'Connor.
When Galvin -- who finished with a 1-3 total -- and Barry O'Dwyer added points, the writing was on the wall for Chriost Ri, who trailed 1-7 to 0-1 at half-time.
Luke Connolly did add to Ciaran Murphy's solitary first-half score but it was na Sceilge, for whom Ciaran Keating and Max Thiemann were outstanding, who eased to their second win of the group stages. DLS Macroom and Chriost Ri will meet to decide who joins Sceilge in the last eight.
Meanwhile, Tralee CBS opened their Corn Ui Mhuiri campaign with a deserved 0-15 to 1-6 win over Intermediate School Killorglin, who make a disappointing exit just a year after reaching the final.
Tralee CBS were backboned by three Kerry minors, Kieran Hurley, Declan Doody and James Walsh and were always in control of this game, in driving wind and rain, though it was not until the second half that the winners asserted their superiority.
In the day's other game, a late scoring burst helped St Brendan's of Killarney into the knockout stages by holding off a spirited St Colman's at Knocknagree, 0-8 to 0-5.
