Neary on double in Marist stroll
Marist College, Athlone proved far too good for a weak Colaiste Mhuire, Mullingar outfit in an all-Westmeath clash in the second round of the Leinster colleges senior football 'A' championship in Ballynacargy.
On a surface that was scarcely playable, the Athlone lads coped far better with the appalling conditions.
They were already 0-4 to 0-0 ahead when Niall Neary rounded off a fine move with a goal midway through the first half and they went on to lead by 1-5 to 0-1 at the break.
Colaiste Mhuire took to the field in the second half in a changed strip but the pattern of the game continued as it had been in the opening half an hour – with Marist dominating throughout the pitch.
Any lingering doubts about the outcome were ended when the Athlone lads pounced for a quickfire brace of goals at the start of the fourth quarter via substitute Aidan Byrne and a second strike of the contest from Neary.
